*** European Tour 1973 ***
Personnel: Jimmy Page :: John Paul Jones :: Robert Plant :: John Bonham.
Notes: Led Zeppelin’s Munich show on their 1973 tour was never pressed on vinyl but received circulation in the mid nineties on titles such as Lunatics In Munich (Holy Grail HGCD 102/3) and Olympiahalle 1973 (Immigrant IM-022~23). The last two titles to feature this tape were released several weeks apart in late 1999, Pure Percy (Flagge) and Storm Und Drang (LedNote LCD-1503A/B). Both of these were upgrades over the older titles. Tarantura is the first silver release of this show since and is a slight upgrade over LedNote. The sound quality is very clear with the emphasis upon the high frequencies with a very thin bass and no hiss. Tarantura increased the volume slightly compared to LedNote making the tape slightly more clear and enjoyable. There are small cuts in the introduction, after “Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp,” “Dazed And Confused” and at 5:58 in “Heartbreaker” with very little music lost.<-(Info taken from collectormusicreviews.com).

*** North American Tour 1973 ***
Personnel: Jimmy Page :: John Paul Jones :: Robert Plant :: John Bonham.
Notes: If the previous show was nirvana, this one is beyond that. An excellent show with rowdy audience that caused the reaction from the side of the authorities. "We've got to get these house lights down. It's pretty pointless us bringing our own lights, if we've got these things going on. Mr Cole, can you take your dress off and get these lights turned down please?" asked Plant in rather humorously mood. His voice is cracking and breaking all over the place, but the band is playing exceptionally well, and from Dazed And Confused on, this show reaches its peak. Dazed has a unique, very dark and thrilling bow solo and Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love and the encore are gutsy and raw and Robert has recovered. John Bonham was introduced as the Drag Queen of New Orleans.<-(Info taken from -Argenteum Astrum).
Some of the first releases to compact disc were Live And Led Live and Live And Led Live Again from Flying Disc, Johnny Piston & the Dogs on Thin Men, and Drag Queen on the original Tarantura label. New Orleans 1973 on TDOLZ came out in 1999 and like all the others was exclusively from the soundboard. In 2006 a virtually complete audience source became available and both Bourbon Street Renegades on Empress Valley and The Witch Queen on Tarantura were released as 6CD sets containing both the audience and soundboard sources. The Drag Queen Of New Orleans from Godfather is the latest presentation of the New Orleans show this time in a 3CD format that gives priority to the soundboard with the audience source used to fill a couple gaps.<-(Info taken from collectorsmusicreviews.com).

Notes: Although Genesis played their first overseas gig in Belgium and made several trips to that country in 1971 and early 1972, they scheduled their first prolonged overseas tour in the first country to truly embrace them. Twenty-three shows were scheduled in April, 1972 and such were their popularity they played in the biggest venues in their young career and many of the shows were taped from the audience for posterity. They played two shows at the Piper Club in Rome on April 18th and this (it isn’t clear if it’s the early or late show) is one of the most detailed and vivid documents in existence of the early stage show. This is a full bodied, three dimensional that captures the bass in particular very well. Earlier releases of this tape can be found on Live In Roma (Tintagel TICD 009) and Piper Club(PMPCDBL9801), which also has “Bye Bye Johnny” (aka “Can-Utility And The Coastliners”). But Highland is a slight upgrade over the older releases. Long Ago In The Rome Hills is an older Highland title but still one of their finest efforts very much worth having.<-(Info taken from collectorsmusicrreview).

Tracks 5 and 16 , Euphony, it's a Gary Valentine song, which is why it never got recorded. The co-author is Lisa Persky who was Valentine's girlfriend. -"We started working with Peter Leeds, who had been Debbie's manager before. I didn't trust him from the moment I was him. Nobody asked him to, but he set up some gigs for us in LA and flew us out. At the Whiskey he came backstage and said he didn't think we should be doing a song I'd written called Euphony. I said, hang on, you're not our musical director. From that moment I'm sure he wanted me out."-.

Notes: Shade Of Dawning contains one of the most important documents of Genesis’ live career. It is the oldest audience recording of any gig they played in England and one of the most valuable from the Nursery Cryme era. The March 4th Watford Technical College gig circulated before, but this release is a significant upgrade over the poor quality, high generation that was floating around before. The music is sharper and Peter Gabriel’s stories, almost inaudible on the old tape, are understandable. The taper was positioned close to the stage and was able to produce a very good audience recording of the event. The audience are very quiet as they follow the tales in what turns out to be a passionate performance by the band. There are three small cuts during Gabriel’s introduction to “The Fountain Of Salmacis,” two small cuts before “Twilight Alehouse,” a small cut before ”The Musical Box” and a short tape pause in the very beginning of the song, and a small cut before “The Return Of The Giant Hogweed.”
Aside from being the earliest Genesis audience recording from England, this valuable for having the only live version of ”Harlequin.” Since the tape cuts in at the very beginning it is hard to say if it is the first song of the set. It wouldn’t be inconceivable to start the show with a mellow acoustic based ballad. The only older audience recording, dating from January 16th Festival Charleroi in Belgium, has a similar set list except “Happy The Man” is played first before “Stagnation.” It is effective in the live setting with the guitars emanating a dreamy landscape perfect in capturing the idea behind Nursery Cryme. Gabriel tells a long story about Thomas Eselberg playing monopoly before the start “Stagnation” which, at the start, maintains the aura of the preceding song.
Gabriel tells the hermaphrodite story before dedicating “The Fountain Of Salmacis” to the Tesco supermarket chain, ”without them, none of this would have been possible.” This is one of the most passionate renditions of the tale with Peter in particular punctuating the verses with screams. Before “Twilight Alehouse” he tells the long “tube train” story which has nothing to do with the song but is famous for being included on the liner notes to Genesis Live released the following year. This is the only recording where he recites the story.
“The Musical Box” has by this time found its place as their most dramatic and compelling live pieces. Gabriel tells the story of the song and speaks about a “naked Patrick Moore” being lowered from the rafters before they start and even without the visuals and the costumes the stark emotions are conveyed. Banks and Hackett hit the hard rock middle with much aggression which will be carried over into the final songs of the night. Before “Hogweed” Gabriel tells the audience they paid six John Lennon impersonators and challenges them to find the real John Lennon. The middle and ending with Hackett and Banks playing closest to heavy metal as Genesis would ever go and when they come out for the encore Gabriel introduces “The Knife” as “a bit of vintage Genesis.” There have been no other silver releases of this tape since Highland produced Shade Of Dawning in 1996 and it remains the definitive edition.<-(Info taken from collectorsmusicreviews.com).
